Hey friend,
A year ago, after the murder of George Floyd, you and millions of other people took action to contest the injustices of state sanctioned murder committed by the police in Minneapolis. Together we signed petitions, marched, held vigils, texted voters and made phone calls to the Minneapolis city council to tell them one thing—DO SOMETHING TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE !
On November 2nd, we have the opportunity to create a new, community-centered approach to safety in Minneapolis by establishing a holistic Department of Public Safety. This Department will include mental health professionals, social workers, and more, ensuring we can respond to each emergency with the care and intention our community deserves.
But friend, the votes on this ballot initiative will be CLOSE, and we need your commitment to volunteer remotely. Will you sign up to learn more about volunteering with us to win this race in Minneapolis?
Since last year, here’s what’s happened in Minneapolis :
After mass global protests about George Floyd’s murder, the Minneapolis City Council committed to decrease funding for the Minneapolis Police Department and hold the force accountable. But by the Fall of 2020 they were already walking back their promises.
Since then Black activists in Minneapolis and our allies began working to change the city charter to establish a new Department of Public Safety, complete with counselors, mental health responders and peace officers.
In March 2021, organizers submitted 20,000 signatures from Minneapolis voters to secure a ballot initiative to make this a reality.
Early voting began September 17th and, now more than ever, we need the pressure to be on until Election Day, November 2nd. Voters in Minneapolis will vote on this initiative—and we need to inform and convince as many people as possible to turnout to vote in favor of a safer city.
Until justice is real,
Arisha, Jenni, Drew, Charles, Morgan, Tammi, Cristel, Alex, Scotty, Ishmael, Ina, Sophia, Khayla, and the Color Of Change PAC team.
