Week In Review.

There’s only four days of the New York legislative session left this week, and VOCAL-NY leaders have been hard at work to get the last of our priorities bills across the finish line.  Two long-time VOCAL-NY leaders, Carl Stubbs and Nathylin A. Flowers,hand delivered a letter to the offices of Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to demand they call HONDA, Syringe Decriminalization, and Parole Justice legislation up for a vote in the last four days of session.  On Thursday, VOCAL-NY’s User’s Union and allies declared another victory after legislation passed to remove prior authorization for medication-assisted treatment for New Yorkers with Medicaid. Last year,Governor Cuomo blocked and vetoed this bill, while at the same time, signing legislation for people with commercial insurance that creates a two-tiered treatment system.  On Friday, tenants and homeless New Yorkers gathered at distressed hotels in Albany, Buffalo, and New York City to demand housing for the homeless. We urged Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to pass the House Our Neighbors with Dignity Act (HONDA) before session ends on Thursday, June 10. We were joined by allies like State Senator Brian Kavanagh, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Buffalo Mayoral candidate India Walton, and 1199SEIU Upstate NY.
