Dear friend,
As early as September 1, abortions could become illegal in Texas.1 In May, Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed a new action that would ban abortion as early as six weeks, a time at which many don’t even know they’re pregnant.
The new law provides financial incentives for just about anyone to sue a medical provider who performs an abortion past six weeks -- providing a loophole for the government to avoid legal challenges, and a means to push the last remaining abortion clinics to be forced to shutter because of lawsuits.
Anti-abortion activists are hoping to discourage medical providers from performing abortions past the six-week mark for fear of legal challenges, even though over 90% of pregnant people seeking abortions in Texas facilities are at least six weeks pregnant.2 Abortion is still legal in Texas and 62% of Texans support the right to abortion, nevertheless, this law will take effect in a matter of weeks.3
Dear friend, we're fighting back, but first, we need your help. It's crucial we act now to maintain our bodily autonomy. Now is your chance to take your support to the next level. Because with your help, we can continue to put pressure on prosecutors and elected officials who have the power to ensure no one is thrown in jail because of an abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, or any other pregnancy outcome.
When our people get access to the reproductive healthcare we need, we thrive. That starts with demanding the solutions that will aid in the healing and prioritization of our reproductive autonomy. This includes a world in which our people are treated with dignity, and free to make choices about our own bodies.
Black women and birthing people bear the brunt of racialized reproductive control, the issue goes much deeper than abortion. We deserve meaningful options regarding where, how, and with whom we will give birth, in a person-centered, anti-racist model of care. We deserve the support of midwives, doulas, and perinatal services that are fully integrated into the maternal care system. Law enforcement including prosecutors has no place in pregnancy decisions. With your help, we can continue our fight calling on them to say NO to criminalizing Black mothers.
