Simone Biles. Naomi Osaka. Sunisa Lee. Women athletes — especially Black women athletes — are often portrayed in ways that don’t reflect their humanity or the breadth of their experiences. And, historically, the experiences of Black people in sports have been erased. Enough is enough. Dear friend, the news media has a responsibility to make sure that stories about impacted women are told in ways that are fair and equitable and that mitigate harm ... not intensify it. And together we can hold them accountable. This moment is our opportunity to call attention to the immense pressure women athletes feel to perform AND the scrutiny they face from the media when they're vulnerable. It's unacceptable & taking a toll. To those journalists and outlets that continuously produce derogatory or bad-faith coverage of women, or even no coverage at all ... you’re on notice.
