The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4) strengthens the federal government's role in overseeing election law changes that could disenfranchise communities of color. The bill just passed the House on party lines and now faces an uphill battle in the Senate.
Republican legislatures are barreling a slew of voter suppression laws across the country that aim to take away YOUR freedom to vote. Normally, those laws could be successfully challenged, but the Supreme Court has made clear it's not interested in protecting the vote. In the last decade, they stripped away the provision that protected ballot access in states with a history of voter suppression and made it more difficult for voters of color to prove discrimination.
