Dear friend,
Hundreds of millions of people don’t have a year to wait for COVID-19 vaccines. It’s unconscionable that millions more people will die waiting for vaccines just because of where they live.
We can prevent that from happening by taking action now.
Doctors Without Borders is calling for COVID-19 vaccines to be distributed fairly and equitably to people all over the world based on need, not profit. Today, we're urging our global community of supporters to join us in this call to action. By adding your name, you’re joining Doctors Without Borders in calling on our nation's leaders to :
- share COVID-19 vaccine doses as quickly and widely as possible around the world.
- help other countries produce mRNA vaccines by sharing knowledge and technology.
- continue support for the waiver of intellectual property for lifesaving medical tools–not just vaccines, but treatments and tests, too.
- pull back the curtain to reveal how pharmaceutical corporations spend taxpayer dollars to bring vaccines and other medical tools to market.
While high-income countries have administered almost 44 percent of the world’s vaccine doses to date, low-income countries have administered just 0.3 percent. Every day that passes is another missed opportunity to protect millions of people.
The United States government has secured enough doses to protect its entire population of 330 million and still have half a billion doses left over. The Biden administration's pledge to share a small portion of the United States’ COVID-19 vaccine surplus and purchase 500 million doses for distribution globally is a strong start–but more can be done.
Please raise your voice for equitable vaccine access for all. This pandemic will not be over until it’s over for everyone, everywhere. Our efforts to stop the spread will only be successful if we share our resources globally, freely, and quickly.
Thank you,
Dr. Carrie Teicher Director of Programs Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.
