Week In Review.

The VOCAL-NY community is heartbroken by news that long time leader Stevie Weltsek (pictured above on the left) has passed. Stevie became a leader during our fight to win Narcan access and expanded overdose training in NYC shelters. After security at his shelter stopped him from reversing a fatal overdose, Stevie told his story publicly in this article with the New York Daily News. Despite overdose being the leading cause of death inside NYC’s shelters for a decade, it was Stevie’s story that helped pressure City Hall to pass the legislation. It also led others in the shelter system to tell similar stories. Stevie became an active member, showing up to support on all VOCAL-NY’s fights, bringing his own stories of incarceration, homelessness & victim of the failed war on drugs.  Stevie will be missed but not forgotten. We will continue the fight for justice, compassion & love in his honor, and in honor of all Thor we have lost. Rest In Power, Stevie.
