Friend,    On July 1st, a new law in Florida will take effect, allowing residents to carry concealed weapons without a license or training. This includes college campuses, places where young adults are meant to feel safe and supported in their pursuit of higher education. The decision by Governor DeSantis to sign this legislation into law demonstrates a flagrant disregard for the safety and well-being of students. By removing essential barriers to firearm access, Florida's lawmakers have effectively turned college campuses into potential battlegrounds. The presence of firearms on college campuses will be incredibly dangerous. Not only do guns pose a direct threat to the lives of students and faculty, but they also contribute to an environment of fear and anxiety that undermines the educational mission of these institutions. When students are forced to worry about the presence of concealed weapons in their midst, they are less able to focus on their studies and engage in the free exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a college education. Let’s prevent further tragedies and ensure that our nation's colleges and universities remain havens for intellectual growth and personal development. As a result, our nation's college students are left vulnerable to the dangers posed by unrestricted campus carry. In light of the growing threat of gun violence in the United States, it is crucial that we act now to protect the lives of college students. A national ban on campus carry would send a clear message that the safety of our nation's students is a top priority. We must prioritize the safety of our college students over the political ambitions of self-serving politicians.
