Dear friend,
This month marks our second anniversary as Co-Executive Directors of Make the Road New York !
As we reflect on the last couple of years and look back on each of our 15+ years with Make the Road NY, we are so proud of the growth of this organization and incredibly grateful for this powerful and loving community.
To all of our members, staff, supporters, and allies – thank you so much for being with us in the fight for dignity and justice.
This year is also extra special because we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. Together, we’ve achieved incredible victories for our communities. Here are some of our personal favorite memories throughout our time here:
Theo : “I still remember the tears of joy from our youth when we won DACA and the thousands that streamed into our offices to learn more and access legal support. And then the pride of seeing our members stand up as plaintiffs to defend DACA and going all the way to the Supreme Court. This policy has changed lives and it is something that every person at Make the Road NY had a hand in achieving.”
Arlenis : “In our early days, we were a small but determined group. We worked out of various small spaces – including the basement of a church in Bushwick – but we didn’t mind because we were grounded in community with friends and family. It’s been a beautiful experience seeing our organization grow into five community centers (three of which are owned by Make the Road NY), which has been the physical manifestation of our values resonating with so many people over the years.”
Jose : “In
December 2014, I joined tens of thousands of New Yorkers on the
streets, outraged that there was no indictment of officers involved in
the killing of Eric Garner. At Foley Square, I stood with hundreds of
Make the Road NY members – teenagers, parents and grandparents – who
understood that the NYPD's destructive policies were breaking up our
families and communities. Over the last 10 years, those same members,
led by our young people, have strived to build healthy and safe
communities without policing at its center. This is hard but necessary
work, and I am proud to
be part of it.”
We now look forward to the future we must build together. Alongside our Deputy Directors Natalia Aristizabal Betancur and Becca Telzak, and our General Counsel, Sienna Fontaine, we look forward to accomplishing our goals with your continued support. Thank you for being a part of this amazing community !
