U.S (NATIVE ORGANIZERS ALLIANCE ACTION FUND) : Stop Kevin McCARTHY’s bad deal for Indian country.

Friends,

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has released his plan to cut critical programs and services across the country -- including devastating cuts to programs important to Indian Country. And he’s planning to hold a vote tomorrow, this Wednesday.

Together, let’s show up for Native communities and ensure our voices are heard !

SIGN AND SEND

For decades, Native healthcare programs have been severely underfunded. According to an analysis by the National Congress of American Indians, funding for Indian Health Services (IHS) would have to double just to match the level of healthcare provided to federal prisoners, and we’d need an even larger investment to match the benefits guaranteed to Medicaid recipients.[1]

However, McCarthy’s plan would cut IHS funding by $327 billion.[2] He’s also calling for even more-stringent work requirements for Medicaid healthcare and SNAP food benefits -- programs that serve low-income people across the country and would disproportionately impact Native communities since poverty rates among Native peoples are roughly double the national average -- 25.4% compared to 12.8%[3][4]

Additionally, McCarthy plans to make cuts to the Social Security Administration, which would put up even more barriers between us and our earned benefits at a time when Tribal members already receive Social Security benefits at a lower rate than the general population, with even wider gaps among Natives with disabilities.[5]

Click here to send a message to your U.S. Representative. Tell them to oppose Speaker McCarthy’s bad deal and to demand the speaker and his caucus stop holding the country’s economy hostage in exchange for these devastating cuts.

Instead of cuts to critical programs and services, we’re demanding a clean debt ceiling vote so the country doesn’t default on funding already approved by Congress under Democratic and Republican presidents alike.

Hawwih (thank you),
