Hi,
My
name is Tracy, and I’m a mom in New Mexico. Last year my fourteen
year-old son, Brayden, was targeted by racist cyberbullies on Instagram
and Snapchat. It made me more aware than ever how dangerous social media
can be for kids.
In
addition to the concerning lack of safeguards for kids like Brayden
it’s scary to watch kids navigate an online world that nudges them to
give up their privacy, interact with strangers, and exposes them to
extreme content and risky behaviors while also addicting them to
screens.
Sign this letter in support of new bipartisan state legislation that will help protect kids online.

Parents
will do anything to protect our children, but tech companies make
billions off social media platforms that are designed to be addictive.
The companies know it’s bad, too : leaked Instagram documents said the
platform is exacerbating body image problems for 1 in 3 teen girls.
I
don’t think it has to be this way, though. You wouldn’t start your car
without making sure your kids are buckled in, so why do we let kids use
platforms that are clearly dangerous without any protections at all ? I
don’t want anyone else’s child to go through the mental pain and social
anxiety that has been forced upon my son.
“Kids
Code” bills are being considered in states across the country,
including New Mexico, Nevada, Maryland, and Minnesota with the hope that
others will soon follow. Legislation like this has already succeeded in
protecting kids across the globe and in California, but not all
American kids have the same rights and protections that can keep them
safe online. Together, we can persuade lawmakers and pass these bills on
a state level !
Children in every state deserve these protections. Will you join me by signing the letter supporting Kids Codes?
